Rami El Assal

Bio Dr. El Assal is a Basic Life Research Scientist (Academic Staff) at the Canary Center for Cancer Early Detection, Department of Radiology, Stanford University School of Medicine. In 2016, Dr. El Assal completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. Before moving to Stanford, he was working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA as well as the Harvard-MIT Health Science and Technology division. In 2016, Dr. El Assal completed a Certificate Program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. El Assal received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST), School of Dentistry, Ajman, UAE in 2007. Subsequently, He completed a one-year Clinical Internship Program in General Dentistry at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)-affiliated training center at AUST-School of Dentistry. Following his internship, he enrolled in an Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry for two years (2008-2010). His research interests revolved around the applications of nano-/micro-scale technologies and biomaterials in medicine, including regenerative and transfusion medicine as well as cancer research. He has published his research work in esteemed peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, including Advanced Materials (Impact Factor (IF): 21.95), Advanced Science (IF: 12.44), Materials Today (IF: 24.45), Nanomedicine, Biotechnology Journal, Biofabrication Journal, ACS Molecular Pharmaceutics, Lab on a Chip, and Scientific Reports (from Nature Publishing Group). His research achievements have been recognized by the Center of Nanoscale Systems (CNS) at Harvard University. In 2015, Dr. El Assal has been nominated/elect as a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International (USA), International International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics (USA), and International Academy of Oral Oncology (UK). Dr. El Assal has a multifaceted and challenging career in research and patient care, and he is now aspiring to a career that will help fulfill his ambition of being an effective teacher, researcher, and clinician. His ultimate goal, along with treating patients on an individual basis, is to be able to treat them on a larger scale through establishing a world-class research facility that develop innovative solutions to clinical problems. During his free time, Dr. El Assal likes to help the people and serve the community.
Ahmed Nagy El Kaffas
Bio We develop quantitative imaging methods to characterize the tumor microenvironment, and to subsequently relate these imaging parameters to biomarkers that can be used for cancer surveillance, diagnosis and treatment monitoring/characterization. The focus is on 1) developing new acquisition methods and protocols to enhance quantification, 2) designing new image processing algorithms, analysis parameters and statistical models to quantitatively characterize imaging data, and 3) using advanced AI methods to further refine quantification or classification. While our methods can be used for other imaging modalities, we primarily focus on Ultrasound imaging modes such as contrast, molecular, elastography and spectroscopic ultrasound. Disease focus include liver cancer and liver metastasis, liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, and tumor blood flow characterization.
Daniel Bruce Ennis
Associate Professor of Radiology (Veterans Affairs)
Bio Daniel Ennis (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology. As an MRI scientist for nearly twenty years, he has worked to develop advanced translational cardiovascular MRI methods for quantitatively assessing structure, function, flow, and remodeling in both adult and pediatric populations. He began his research career as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University during which time he formed an active collaboration with investigators in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). Thereafter, he joined the Departments of Radiological Sciences and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University as a post doc and began to establish an independent research program with an NIH K99/R00 award focused on “Myocardial Structure, Function, and Remodeling in Mitral Regurgitation.” For ten years he led a group of clinicians and scientists at UCLA working to develop and evaluate advanced cardiovascular MRI exams as PI of several NIH funded studies. In 2018 he returned to Stanford Radiology and the Radiological Sciences Lab to bolster programs in cardiovascular MRI. He is also the Director of Radiology Research for the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System where he oversees a growing radiology research program.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Radiological Sciences Laboratory
Bio Koray Ertan received his BSc degree in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University, Turkey. He completed his PhD in the same department under the supervision of Prof. Ergin Atalar. During his PhD, he worked as a researcher at National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM) of Turkey. His thesis study is the development of novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies such as gradient array systems for increasing diagnostic quality of the MR images, reducing the specific absorption rate and scan time.
He joined Prof. Brian Rutt's group as a postdoctoral researcher in April 2019. Later, he was also affilated as a MINDED postdoctoral fellow in June 2019. As part of the MINDED program, his current research focuses on a system for modulating the permeability of the blood brain barrier using focused radio frequency heating generated from ultra-high field MRI transmit coils for enhanced treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders with nanomedicines. Additionally, his research interest mostly includes MRI technolgies such as RF pulse design, gradient systems, field monitoring, multi-coil gradient and shim arrays.
