Bio

Lawrence Tim Goodnough, MD is Professor of Pathology and Medicine (Hematology) in the Departments of Pathology and Medicine, at Stanford University.

Dr. Goodnough received his medical degree in 1975 from the University of Pennsylvania, completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama Hospitals in Birmingham, Alabama, and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). He is board certified in Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology; and has an American College of Pathology Certification in Blood Banking.

In his fellowship at CWRU, Dr. Goodnough specialized in coagulation research and later focused on Transfusion Medicine as a specialty that embraces the fields of Blood Banking, Coagulation, and Hematology.

As a frequent lecturer, he has presented his work in more than 300 national and international forums. Dr. Goodnough has contributed more than 500 articles and 200 abstracts to the medical literature. He has a long-standing interest in devising strategies for patients to utilize alternatives to blood transfusion for the management of anemia, a concept more recently defined as Patient Blood Management.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests

Dr. Goodnough has a long-standing interest in alternatives to blood therapy. This includes the concept of antologous blood predonation before elective surgery; acute normovolemic hermodicution;erythropoietic agents to stimulate red blood cell production; pharmacologic strategies to reduce blood loss; artificial oxygen carriers; and re-evaluation of the transfusion trigger.

Hematopoietic Stem cell biology-created a SCID mouse model to study engraftment of cord blood derived hematopoietic cells and use of this model to develop gene transfer technology for Fanconi anemia.
Clinical research interests are to develop new protocols to reduce Toxicity from the conditioning regimens for stem cell transplants, reducing graft vs host disease, treatment of viral infections post transplant and use of manipulated HSC graft in patients who receive haplo donor transplants.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a treatment modality which is being broadly applied to a growing number of disorders. Increasing success with BMT is offering improved survival to pediatric and adult patients with acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, lymphomas, and a variety of solid tumors as well as severe aplastic anemia.

I perform outcomes-based research in obstetrics investigating strategies to better prevent and treat patients with postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. I also have research interests in the use of point-of-care devices for investigating key changes in the maternal hematologic and hemostatic profiles that occur during the peripartum and postpartum periods.
