    Lei Stanley Qi

    Assistant Professor of Bioengineering and of Chemical and Systems Biology

    Bio Dr. Lei Stanley Qi is Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Department of Chemical and Systems Biology, and a faculty fellow in Stanford ChEM-H. He is one of major contributors to the CRISPR technology development for genome engineering. He demonstrated the first use of the nuclease-deactivated Cas9 (dCas9) for genome targeting in cells. Using dCas9, His lab developed the CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) and CRISPR activation (CRISPRa) technologies for gene expression regulation, which is broadly used for high-throughput study of genomics in different organisms. He co-developed the CRISPR application for chromatin imaging in living cells. His lab greatly expanded the CRISPR toolbox for engineering the genome and epigenome, including multiplexed epigenome editing, programmable 3D genome manipulation (CRISPR-GO), live-cell imaging (LiveFISH), and CRISPR antivirals for targeting RNA viruses (PAC-MAN). He obtained B.S. in Physics from Tsinghua University, and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California Berkeley in 2012. He joined UCSF as Systems Biology Faculty Fellow between 2012 to 2014, and joined the faculty at Stanford University since 2014. His lab combines genome engineering with synthetic biology to understand the function of mammalian genomes and develop gene therapy.

    Bio Susan Ruyu Qi, MD, is an Ophthalmology Resident (PGY4) from Canada currently at Stanford for a Master of Science program in Clinical Informatics Management. She is passionate about innovation in medicine, particularly the role of Artificial Intelligence in the field of ophthalmology. She was Editor in Chief of one of the first Medium publications dedicated to AI in Healthcare back in 2017.

    In her spare time, she has completed the Machine Learning Certificate from Stanford on Coursera and is pursuing an online MBA program at Quantic School of Business. In residency, her research interest focused on Immediately Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery (ISBCS), Topography-guided LASIK outcomes, and the clinical trial of a novel retinal oximetry device, Zilia Ocular.

    Having grown up in Montreal, Canada and China, she is fully fluent in English, French and Mandarin Chinese, and works occasionally as a medical translator. She holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Université de Montréal.

    Clinical Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy

    Bio Dr. Qian is a board-certified radiation oncologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.

    He is committed to providing personalized and compassionate care that optimizes patient safety, treatment effectiveness, and long-term outcomes.

    In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Qian has conducted extensive research that is often focused on the impact of radiation therapy on patient outcomes and health care system costs.

    He has presented the findings at annual meetings of the American Radium Society, American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Survivorship Symposium, Palliative Care in Oncology Symposium, and elsewhere.

    Dr. Qian has published articles in journals such as Clinical Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Practical Radiation Oncology, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology ? Biology ? Physics (IJROBP), and more.

    Dr. Qian co-authored the chapter on radiation therapy for liver tumors in the book Radiation Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Clinical Data. He also co-authored the chapter on liver care for the book Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy.

    He has earned numerous honors, including the Malcolm A. Bagshaw Award for leadership and outstanding scientific achievement. This award is named for a pioneer in radiation therapy and former chair of the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
