    Bio As a Pediatric Dentist, I feel I have a special role in helping pediatric patients to overcome their anxiety and develop trust and communication with their caregiver. I have been fortunate to work with a wide variety of patients, young and adults, whom unfortunately have anxiety attending dental clinics to receive care, which jeopardized their oral health and further their overall health and lifestyle. My passion is to help and educate patients and their family about these areas that so many of us take for granted. My clinical and research training have helped me to gain a valuable perspective on the importance of my career across health and educational settings.

    At Stanford, I am working in the Division of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery within the Department of Surgery, in which I am exposed to variety of oral and craniofacial cases, including head and neck cancers in pediatric patients. This gives me a unique opportunity to work and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that includes a wide range of healthcare professionals as well as medical and dental specialists. At Stanford, I am able to deepen my knowledge and pass that along to the patients.

    My training in pediatric and preventive dentistry has been integrated into my research and patient care. I completed my specialization in Preventive and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Ernst?Moritz?Arndt Greifswald, Greifswald, Germany and I received my Dr. Med. Dent. (equivalent to DMSc/Ph.D) with Magna Cum Laude, in 2015 (Advisor: Prof. Christian H. Splieth). Furthermore, I worked as a Clinical Instructor in pre-doctoral pediatric sessions at the University of Ernst?Moritz?Arndt Greifswald. During the four years of my specialization, I volunteered to deliver dental public health services at kindergartens, primary schools, and refugee camps in the city Greifswald. In addition, I have a wide experience in working at various pediatric hospital settings and portable dental clinic, treating varieties of patients including pediatric patients with special needs and I am well qualified to use conscious sedation techniques. I received my Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree in 2010 from the Ajman University (AU) School of Dentistry, Ajman, UAE. Following my graduation, I enrolled in a one-year internship program in General Dentistry (2010-2011) at AU School of Dentistry.

    From April 2013 to October 2014, I worked as a Research Assistant in the Genomics and Proteomics Laboratory (Advisor: Prof. Uwe Volker; Mentor: Dr. Manuela Salazar) at the University of Ernst?Moritz?Arndt Greifswald. This opportunity had furthered my interest in scientific research and enhanced my laboratory skills to investigate oral and dental diseases. Specifically, I was involved in research projects addressing the characterization of the human saliva proteome in order to identify significant biomarker pattern associated to chronic periodontitis, as well as studying proteomic data from whole saliva, which are associated with the development of oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Beside the experimental lab work, I was also involved in the post-processing of mass spectrometry (MS) data.

    I have a multicultural family, and I love to learn about different cultures. Also, I speak five languages at different proficiency levels.

    Bio Shipra Arya, MD SM FACS is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine and section chief of vascular surgery at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System. She has a Master?s degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health with focus on research methodology and cardiovascular epidemiology. She completed her General Surgery Residency at Creighton University Medical Center followed by a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at University of Michigan. She has been funded by American Heart Association (AHA), NIH/NIA GEMSSTAR grant, VA Palo Alto Center for Innovation and Implementation (Ci2i) and is currently funded by VA HSR&D. The accumulated evidence from her research all points to the fact that frailty is a versatile tool that can be utilized to guide surgical decision making, inform patient consent and design quality improvement initiatives at the patient and hospital level. The field of frailty research in surgical population is still relatively nascent and her current work focuses on streamlining frailty evaluation, and implementation of patient and system level interventions to improve surgical outcomes and enhance patient centered care.

    Bio Auriel August MD is a general surgery resident at Stanford Hospital passionate about health equity. She received her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University concentrating in biomechanics and biomaterials. While at Duke she spent 5 years improving deep brain stimulation for treatment of Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. She went on to earn her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School where she was selected to the medical education scholar tract. While in residency she received training in medical device development as a Stanford-Byers Center Biodesign Innovation Fellow during which time Dr. August co-founded The Aquarius Lab, a medical device incubator. Dr. August plans to build a career using technology and design to close gaps in healthcare delivery worldwide.

    Bio Dr. Avise is a board-certified vascular surgeon specializing in cutting edge treatments of vascular disease. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    She has helped to expand access to expert vascular surgery in the East Bay, establishing Stanford Health Care?s first vascular surgery practices at the medical center in Emeryville and at the Stanford Health Care ? ValleyCare hospital in Pleasanton. Dr. Avise serves as the medical director of the Pleasanton vascular laboratory, an IAC accredited facility, where she advances developments in noninvasive testing to aid in early diagnosis of vascular disease.

    Her focus is on early detection and disease prevention, minimally invasive (endovascular) techniques, and complex open surgery. She treats a wide variety of conditions, including aortic aneurysm, limb salvage, varicose veins, peripheral vascular disease, carotid disease, complex wound care, and dialysis access.

    Bio Ani is a nurse practitioner with previous experience in clinical research in cardiovascular disease. Her clinical practice is providing pre and post operative medical care for the admitted vascular surgery patients, and ensuring discharge plans are seamless and comprehensive. She has been a nurse practitioner for the inpatient Vascular Surgery service since 2014 and was promoted to the Lead Advanced Practice Provider in 2020. She oversees all aspects of the Vascular Surgery APP's in Palo Alto, Pleasanton, and Emeryville. She completed her master of science in nursing, and nurse practitioner training at the Yale School of Nursing in New Haven, CT; and remains an active alumni member. She is a board certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

    Bio Dr. Jean Bao is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology. She is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Bao?s clinical interests include treatment of men and women who have breast cancer, benign breast disease, genetic mutations, family history of breast cancer, or other breast cancer risk factors. Procedures performed by Dr. Bao include skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomies, partial mastectomies, oncoplastic procedures, benign breast lesion excisions, axillary node dissections, and sentinel lymph node biopsies. Dr. Bao is certified in breast ultrasound and utilizes this technology to visualize and biopsy breast masses.

    She completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center under the mentorship of one of the world?s foremost experts in the field. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Bao practiced at the University of Chicago as an assistant professor of surgery in the Breast Center.

    Dr. Bao works closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, and other breast cancer specialists in a multidisciplinary setting to provide high quality, evidence-based, and individualized care. Dr. Bao is a strong advocate for patient education and empowerment and strives to deliver compassionate care to patients and their families.

    Her research has focused on the management of breast cancer in older patients, male breast cancer, high-risk breast cancers, and axillary lymph node management after preoperative chemotherapy. She also has strong research interests in intraoperative 3D breast imaging, the benefits and risks of prophylactic mastectomy, fertility issues in young women with breast cancer, and the role of endocrine therapy in breast cancer. She has delivered presentations on a wide range of topics related to breast cancer at national and regional meetings. The results of her research have been published in JAMA, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Breast Journal, Clinical Imaging, and elsewhere.

    For her scholarship and research achievements, Dr. Bao has won numerous honors and awards. She earned the Excellence in Teaching Award twice from the University of Chicago Department of Surgery. She was also named a Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium Scholar, where she joined other medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists who lead in the field.

    Dr. Bao is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is a member of Breast Disease Site Work Group in the Society of Surgical Oncology, and serves as the society?s external liaison to the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria Breast Imaging Panel. She previously held the position of chair of the Cancer Committee at University of Chicago Medicine.

    Bio Nicolas Barreto, PhD, MPH, is a Biostatistician of the S-SPIRE Center. He works with and supports multidisciplinary teams in research design, analysis, and reporting. Nicolas obtained a masters of public health degree in biostatistics and epidemiology, and his doctorate in Basic and Applied Social Psychology. He has served as a data consultant, statistician, and research consultant while working with a variety of investigators; including doctors, residents, psychologists, and professors. Nicolas has contributed academic research and grant work on a variety of projects; motivation and education, effects of cancer treatment on cognitive outcomes, social support impact on cancer treatment, medical mistrust and organ donation, and others.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Bergquist's research interests are driven by his clinical practice and his background as an engineer. Clinical research interests are focused on improving outcomes for cancer patients. Dr. Bergquist has published on the utilization of biomarkers in particular CA 19-9 as a means to appropriately triage the multidisciplinary management of patients with advanced GI cancers. In addition, he is interested in improving understanding of optimal surgical management through the utilization of big data to understand trends in treatment and incidence as well as genomic patterns in cancer. Dr. Bergquist is also interested in surgical education and has been active in the production of educational videos focused on technical aspects of HPB surgery and in particular minimally invasive techniques. Finally, Dr. Bergquist's background as an engineer drives him to focus on the intersection between technology and clinical care. To this end, he is passionate about innovation in both hardware and software, and the potential impact of innovative design on the field of medicine.

    Bio Dr. Black was raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and completed her undergraduate studies at Bard College where she majored in biology. After college, she joined Teach For America and taught for two years as a 12th grade physics teacher in the South Side of Chicago. Dr. Black then attended medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where she continued to advocate for kids? education and health on a national level as a White House intern in 2016. During the clinical years of medical school, Dr. Black realized her passion for surgery and was especially fascinated by free flap reconstruction. She therefore spent a dedicated year studying autologous breast reconstruction outcomes and lower extremity microsurgical techniques within the plastic surgery department at Georgetown. During her last year of medical school, Dr. Black did an away rotation at Stanford and was attracted to the welcoming community and dedication to research and international volunteering. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, Barre workouts, hiking, kayaking, traveling, art museums, improv comedy, tea, and relaxing with family and friends. Dr. Black is the oldest of four sisters, one of whom works in the wine industry in the nearby Napa Valley.

She works with the Asian Liver Center towards the global eradication of hepatitis B, the leading cause of liver cancer and liver disease globally. Dr. Chao helped launch the Jade Ribbon Campaign in 2001 to improve public and physician awareness about hepatitis B. Dr. Chao also serves as the Trauma Medical Director of LPCH and is interested in preventing pediatric traumatic injuries.

    Bio Dr. Chao is a board-certified general/trauma surgeon at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, an Adjunct Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery/Division of General Surgery in the School of Medicine, and a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health. She is the co-director of the undergraduate course HUMBIO 129S: Global Public Health and the medical school seminar SURG 236: Seminar in Global Surgery and Anesthesia, both Winter Quarter classes. She is also the associate director of Global Health: Beyond Diseases and International Organizations, a two-week intensive Spring Quarter course for Stanford residents and fellows.

    Prior to her current roles, she served as a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow with Harvard Medical School's Program in Global Surgery and Social Change. There, she conducted cost-effectiveness analyses and pursued expansion of surgical delivery for indigent populations through surgical workforce and infrastructure development internationally, working primarily in Liberia, Kenya, and Haiti. She completed the CTSA/Lucile Packard Innovation Fellowship at Stanford Biodesign, eventually becoming a co-founder of Zenflow, Inc., a venture-backed medical device company working in minimally-invasive therapy for prostate disease.

    Dr. Chao holds dual Bachelor's degrees in Symbolic Systems and Psychology from Stanford University, as well as MD and MPH degrees from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She completed General Surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our research laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanics of the cardiovascular system, especially with respect to interactions between medical devices and the dynamic cardiovascular environment. We use medical imaging, 3D geometric modeling, and custom deformation quantification techniques to investigate disease processes and medical device performance. We are interested in the dynamics of the heart, aorta, and peripheral vasculature, and are always seeking ways to apply our research to current and emerging therapies. While our research pursuits seek to add to the fundamental understanding of cardiovascular biomechanics, all of our projects are directly related to improving medical device design, evaluation, regulation, and their use in clinical practice.

    Bio Dr. HyeRan Choo is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is Director of Craniofacial and Airway Orthodontics in the Department of Surgery and Co-Director of Stanford Digital Craniofacial and Airway Orthodontic Fellowship. She is also a Faculty Fellow of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.

    After graduating from Seoul National University with a combined degree in the Natural Sciences and Dental Surgery in 2002, Dr. Choo received her Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her orthodontic residency and Masters in Science degree program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Following her Craniofacial Fellowship at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Dr. Choo was recruited as a full-time faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania and The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Choo joined the faculty of Stanford University School of Medicine in 2016. Dr. Choo is a board-certified craniofacial orthodontist by American Board of Orthodontics since 2008 and eligible for board-certification in sleep medicine by American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

    Dr. Choo?s areas of expertise are non-surgical airway management and facial reconstruction for newborns with cleft and/or Robin Sequence in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Her treatments utilize simple custom-fabricated orthodontic devices to provide the neonates with healthy correctional environment with great respect for their natural growth potential of the face. She also practices the full scope of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea management as well as orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics for patients with cleft and craniofacial abnormalities in a multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

    Dr. Choo?s treatment philosophy is based on a fundamental understanding of facial growth and oral functions (Biocreative Orthodontic Strategy). Her research focuses on translation of health innovation technology for the advancement of infant orthodontics. She also pioneers the development of skeletal anchorage-based orthodontic and orthopedic treatment strategies for pediatric sleep apnea patients.

    Bio Kirk A. Churukian MD, FACS is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Churukian completed training in general surgery, plastic surgery, and hand surgery. He was board certified in general surgery and is currently board certified in plastic surgery.

    Dr. Churukian is a member of several local, state, and national professional societies and has practiced in the Los Gatos/San Jose areas for more than 20 years. He tries to bring a friendly, creative, and patient focused approach to his cosmetic and reconstructive surgery practice.

    In addition to his private cosmetic practice, Dr. Churukian serves the community as a trauma specialist at San Jose Regional Medical Center. At this level II Trauma Center, he specializes in facial and orbital fracture repair and complex reconstructive surgery of the trunk and extremities. He also maintains an ongoing commitment to enhancing self-image with breast reconstruction for cancer survivors.

    Dr. Churukian grew up as a first generation eldest son of Armenian parents in Southern California and attended the University of Southern California, graduating with a degree in Psychobiology. Always interested in athletics, He participated in swimming and water polo throughout high school and played club water polo in college. This interest in aquatics was transferred to his children, all of whom are swimmers, and two of whom are avid water polo players. He currently resides in Menlo Park, California and is currently still married to his first wife ;-). He enjoys supporting Stanford athletics, except when the USC Trojans come to town!

    Bio Dr. Robin Cisco is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon. She specializes in surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands and has expertise in lymph node dissection for thyroid cancer. Dr Cisco received her medical degree at Duke University before moving to Stanford for general surgery residency. During her residency, she completed a two-year research fellowship in surgical oncology, with a focus on cancer immunology.

    After residency, she completed an endocrine surgery fellowship with the internationally recognized UCSF Division of Endocrine Surgery. She is the author of multiple publications related to endocrine surgery and surgical oncology and has an interest in minimally invasive approaches to thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery. She is currently co-director of Stanford's multidisciplinary Adrenal Tumors Program.

    Dr. Cisco focuses on providing outstanding surgical care in an environment that is supportive of her patients and their families. She enjoys patient education and preoperative counseling, and seeks to lessen the anxiety that often comes with a recommendation for surgery. She currently sees patients both in San Jose at Stanford's Cancer Center South Bay and in Palo Alto in the Endocrine Oncology and Surgery clinic.

    Bio Halley Darrach is a PGY-1 plastic and reconstructive surgery resident at Stanford Health. She received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins and her bachelor's in cellular biology from California State University Northridge. While at Hopkins, Dr. Darrach completed a dedicated research fellowship studying oncologic reconstruction outcomes under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Sacks and worked as a medical illustrator. Prior to residency, she spent several years conducting astrobiology research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and at a biotech startup company, where she helped adapt NASA technology for medical and counterterrorism applications. While she is currently undecided as to subspecialty, Dr. Darrach's research interests include microsurgery, oncologic reconstruction, gender affirming surgery, ethnic plastic surgery, societal perceptions of deformity, and use of medical illustration in surgical education.

    Bio Kristen Davis, MPH is a Social Science Research Coordinator who has been working at Stanford since 2013, she joined S-SPIRE in March of 2018. She has a background in biology as well as public health. Her interests include health disparities as well as outcomes research. She supports multiple Principal Investigators with their current research as well as assists with the management of federal grant submissions.

    Bio Dr. Dawes is a board-certified, fellowship-trained colon and rectal surgeon. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Dawes treats a wide variety of conditions involving the colon, rectum, and anus, always leveraging the latest evidence and technologies. He is fully trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques--including laparoscopic, robotic, and trans-anal minimally invasive surgery--and strives to employ them, whenever possible, in an effort to reduce pain and shorten recovery.

    In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Dawes is a health services researcher, receiving his Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. His research focuses on policy development, measurement, and evaluation for patients with colorectal conditions. He is particularly interested in using data to drive policy interventions aimed at reducing disparities in quality, access, and value.

    Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Dawes completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles followed by a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He has authored articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Cancer, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Health Services Research, and JAMA Surgery. His work has also been featured in the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Press, and HealthDay News.

    A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Dawes received his A.B. in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University and his M.D. from Vanderbilt University.

    Bio Dr Vivian Emmely de Ruijter is a Stanford University trained physician in healthcare technology innovation. She is a senior manager for Manatt's digital and technology consulting practice, which offers innovative full-service business consulting and legal services, as well as venture capital. Vivian works with healthcare technology and medtech companies to create clinical, regulatory, business and marketing strategies. A medical professional, Vivian leverages her clinical experience to build solutions that advance innovation in healthcare.

    In addition to her current role at Manatt, she serves as the Assistant-Director of the Stanford Pediatric Device Consortium in collaboration with the U.S. FDA. She was also the 2016 Gerhard Grube?s Innovation Fellow at Byers Center of Biodesign at Stanford University after completing her training in hybrid interventional strategies at the IRCAD in France. Dr de Ruijter holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from The Erasmus University in the Netherlands, a post-doctoral designation in Biodesign, Pediatric Healthcare Technology Innovation, and Surgical Education and Innovation from Stanford University School of Medicine and School of Bioengineering, and completed the Stanford Ignite Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, an executive program focused on the fundamentals of business administration. She continues to teach at Stanford University and co-teaches among others MED275B, an undergraduate course in the fundamental principles of Biodesign.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests My research interests are focused on minimizing the impact of breast cancer from a diagnostic and therapuetic standpoint. Breast MRI is a powerful tool to facilitate the screening for and staging of breast cancer, and can be valuable adjunct to guide breast surgery. Oncoplastic surgical techniques optimize cosmesis after breast cancer surgery. Accelerated radiotherapy after lumpectomy decreases radiotherapy treatment times from 6 weeks to just 1 to 5 days.
