Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery
Bio Dr. Chrysovalantou Faniku performed her undergraduate studies at the University of Bedfordshire in England (UK) from 2008-2012, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She continued her Master degree in Reproductive and Developmental Biology at St George?s Medical School in London from 2012-2013. Her research focused on post-ovulatory wound repair and scarring. Dr. Faniku worked as a research assistant at King?s College London prior to pursuing a Ph.D. in Glasgow in 2014. She completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in 2018. Her research focused on Cx43 and Panx1, how these are impacted by diabetes and ischemia and how they could be potential therapeutic targets for wound healing of diabetic ulcers. In 2018, Dr. Faniku started her first postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Otolaryngology working in the lab of Dr. Jon-Paul Pepper. Her project investigates the role of the hedgehog pathway in facial nerve regeneration after injury.

Bio Mohsen Fathzadeh is a Medical Geneticist and has 20+ years of experience in genomic science applications to advance health in diverse human populations. He conducted his Ph.D. thesis at Yale University, at Lab Prof Arya Mani, where he co-characterized a genetic form of familial Metabolic Syndrome. Since 2015, he has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford CV Med, Psychiatry, and PHS and eagerly conducting functional genomic analysis with mentorship from Professors Thomas Quertermous, Ruth O'Hara Drs. Joshua Knowles and David Rehkopf. Throughout collaboration with Merck & Co., Inc, he co-led identifying a gene regulator of body fat distribution and has been involved in characterizing several other insulin resistance and obesity-related genes. In his recent investigations, he analyzed the (epi)genetic link between newborn body fat distribution and high maternal gestational glucose levels in mother-child cohorts from multi-ethnic and deprived communities. He aims to leverage discoveries of genes and evolutionary pathways involved in regulating healthspan and age-related diseases and improve patients' lives. In his free time, Mohsen likes to go to the gym, swim and run, spend time with colleagues and learn about different cultures.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Research interests include (1) computer simulation and modeling of cardiovascular physiology with specific attention paid to congenital heart disease and its treatment, (2) the evaluation and treatment of pulmonary hypertension/pulmonary vascular diseases, and (3) development and testing of medical devices/therapies for the treatment of congenital heart disease and pulmonary vascular diseases.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests My current research program focuses on the following questions: (1) Why do children born preterm experience adverse outcomes in cognition, learning, language, and reading? (2) How do interventions to improve reading and other skills affect skill development and structural properties of the brain in children born preterm and at term? (3) How can we improve health care delivery for all children with disabilities?

Current Research and Scholarly Interests My laboratory investigates how oncogenes initiate and sustain tumorigenesis. I have developed model systems whereby I can conditionally activate oncogenes in normal human and mouse cells in tissue culture or in specific tissues of transgenic mice. In particular using the tetracycline regulatory system, I have generated a conditional model system for MYC-induced tumors. I have shown that cancers caused by the conditional over-expression of the MYC proto-oncogene regress with its inactivation.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Working with English- and Spanish-learning children from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, our research examines the importance of early language experience in supporting language development. We are deeply involved in community-based research in San Jose, designing an innovative parent-engagement program for low-resource Latino families with young children. We are also conducting field studies of beliefs about child development and caregiver-child interaction in rural villages in Senegal. A central goal of this translational research is to help parents understand their vital role in facilitating children?s language and cognitive growth.
