Bio

Dr. Stephen Ruoss specializes in both critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine. His pulmonary medicine clinical practice includes a focus the treatment of chronic bronchiectasis and mycobacterial lung infections, and also on rare lung diseases, including lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). He has practiced in academic pulmonary and critical care medicine for over 20 years.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests

We have an active collaborative project examining basic and clinical aspects of non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung infection in non-immune compromised adults. Studies have examined possible cellular immune mechanisms for increased susceptibility to these infections, and are also investigating aspects of optimal diagnosis and treatment. In addition, a clinical and translational research program is investigating the causes and genetic factors underlying the evolution of bronchiectasis. Projects include genetic susceptibility in bronchiectasis, as well as therapy projects for adults with pulmonary NTM infections.

Comparison of Two- Versus Three-antibiotic Therapy for Pulmonary Mycobacterium Avium Complex Disease Not Recruiting
More
NTM therapy consists of a multi-drug macrolide based regimen for 18-24 months. Treated patients frequently experience debilitating side effects, and many patients delay the start of antibiotic treatment due to these risks. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue, and rare but serious toxicities include ocular toxicity, hearing loss, and hematologic toxicity. To date, most of the evidence underlying the current treatment recommendations has come from observational studies in which either a macrolide has been combined with rifampin and ethambutol, or in some cases combined with ethambutol alone. The proposed study will answer whether a third drug is necessary or whether taking two drugs can increase tolerability without a substantial loss of efficacy.

Safety and Efficacy of Saracatinib In Subjects With Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Recruiting
More
This study is being done to determine if there is a potential benefit of saracatinib in LAM subjects. Based on the information of this trial, additional clinical development trials will be needed. The study will also test the tolerability of 125 mg of saracatinib given once daily over a 9 month period.

I am interested in studying the effects of inflammation in the lung, in particular, how N-acetylcysteine may affect and decrease that in CF patients. I am the PI of a multi-center study researching this question. Additionally, in a separate study involving children who have received lung transplants, I am a participating site in an NIH-sponsored observational and mechanistic multi-center study that will examine the role of viral infections in causing chronic graft rejection.
