Ann M. Arvin
Lucile Salter Packard Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Emerita
Research Interests
Our laboratory investigates the pathogenesis of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, focusing on the functional roles of particular viral gene products in pathogenesis and virus-cell interactions in differentiated human cells in humans and in Scid-hu mouse models of VZV cell tropisms in vivo, and the immunobiology of VZV infections.

C. Garrison Fathman
Professor of Medicine (Immunology and Rheumatology), Emeritus
Research Interests
My lab of molecular and cellular immunology is interested in research in the general field of T cell activation and autoimmunity. We have identified and characterized a gene (GRAIL) that seems to control regulatory T cell (Treg) responsiveness by inhibiting the Treg IL-2 receptor desensitization. We have characterized a gene (Deaf1) that plays a major role in peripheral tolerance in T1D. Using PBC gene expression, we have provisionally identified a signature of risk and progression in T1D.

Clinical Focus
Primary Immunodeficiency, Pediatrics
Research Interests
My laboratory is focused on defining cellular and molecular mechanisms that limit T cell responses to vaccines and pathogens during normal early postnatal development and in cases of inherited genetic immunodeficiencies. We are also determinomg how these limitations in immunity can be overcome by using novel approaches for vaccine adjuvants for influenza vaccine and by using catalytically inactive Cas proteins for inducing endogenous gene expression.

Edward Mocarski
Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Emeritus
Research Interests
My research interests focused on the biology and pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV), an opportunistic pathogen that causes significant disease worldwide, reporting discoveries in areas of CMV gene regulation, DNA replication and packaging, maturation, impact on the host cell, disease pathogenesis, latency and reactivation, host cell death signaling and chemokine system. In the last 20 years of my academic career, we studied viral cell death suppressors and discovered ZBP1-RIPK3 necroptosis.

Erin Mordecai
Associate Professor of Biology and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment
Research Interests
Our research focuses on the ecology of infectious disease. We are interested in how climate, species interactions, and global change drive infectious disease dynamics in humans and natural ecosystems. This research combines mathematical modeling and empirical work. Our main study systems include vector-borne diseases in humans and fungal pathogens in California grasses.
